Der E-Book-Manager Calibre hat den Sprung auf Version 8 gemacht. Die Tatsache, dass gerade mal ein Jahr vergangen ist, seit Calibre in Version 7 veröffentlicht wurde, täuscht über das tatsächliche Alter der App hinweg. Das Open-Source-Projekt wurde 2006 gestartet und ist auch 19 Jahre später immer noch aktiv.
Für Calibre-Nutzer in Deutschland dürften die Neuerungen im Bereich des integrierten E-Book-Viewers am interessantesten sein. So können den Entwicklern zufolge nun auch umfangreichere E-Books deutlich schneller geöffnet werden. Die mit dem Sprung auf Version 8 integrierte Verbesserung sorgt beispielsweise dafür, dass sich ein vierhunderttausend Wörter umfassendes Textdokument im EPUB-Format „auf typischer Hardware“ jetzt in weniger als einer Sekunde öffnen lässt.
Wenn in einem in Calibre geöffneten E-Book Informationen zur Position der einzelnen Seiten vorhanden sind, lassen sich diese mithilfe des Calibre-Viewers jetzt auch direkt anspringen.
Zudem wurde der E-Book-Viewer von Calibre um die Unterstützung von Profilen erweitert, sodass sich sämtliche Einstellungen profilbezogen speichern und entsprechend schnell auch wieder öffnen lassen.
Vorlesequalität und PDF-Konvertierung verbessert
Die Calibre-Entwickler haben mit Version 8 die Text-to-Speech-Engine Piper integriert, mit deren Hilfe man sich auch deutschsprachige Bücher in akzeptabler Qualität vorlesen lassen kann. Positiv ist auf jeden Fall zu erwähnen, dass es sich hierbei um einen Sprachgenerator handelt, der ausschließlich lokal arbeitet.
Beim Konvertieren von PDF-Dateien in E-Book-Formate stehen jetzt zusätzliche Optionen bereit, wenn es darum geht, Kopf- und Fußzeilen zu entfernen. Der neu integrierte PDF-Konvertierungsmechanismus sollte diese in den meisten Fällen automatisch erkennen und entfernen.
KEPUB-Format von Kobo integriert
Die mit Calibre 8 ebenfalls neue, native Integration des KEPUB-Formats von Kobo dürfte in Deutschland weniger Nutzer betreffen. Die E-Book-Reader von Kobo werden hierzulande als Tolino vermarktet und mit einer Software ausgeliefert, die mit dem KEPUB-Format nichts anfangen kann.
Die freie 3D-Software Blender steht in Version 4.4 ab sofort für Windows, macOS und Linux sowie als Quellcode zum Download zur Verfügung. Das Hauptaugenmerk lag diesmal auf Softwarequalität, weshalb es weniger große neue Funktionen gibt, sondern eine Vielzahl Verbesserungen und Performanceschübe, die alltägliche Aufgaben beschleunigen sollen.
Dem Release ging eine Qualitätsoffensive voraus, bei der nicht nur Fehler behoben wurden. Die Entwickler haben darüber hinaus viele Bereiche von Blender auf modernere Technik portiert.
Verbesserte Bedienoberfläche
Die Entwickler haben eine lange Liste an kleineren Problemen mit der Benutzeroberfläche abgearbeitet. So unterscheidet sich die Schaltfläche für Materialien jetzt besser von dem für die Welt. Beim Rendern einer Animation direkt aus dem Viewport heraus erscheint jetzt ein Ladebalken. Ein Glitch in der Anzeige der Frames pro Sekunde (FPS) wurde behoben.
Zahlreiche Menüs haben die Entwickler neu sortiert und, wo sinnvoll, mit Icons versehen. Man kann jetzt auch im Sculptmodus Animationen abspielen und, während eine Animation läuft, funktionieren trotzdem die Tooltips. Der Text in den Tooltips ist nun besser lesbar.
Die Informationen, die in der Statusbar ganz unten am Bildschirmrand erscheinen, wurden für zahlreiche Werkzeuge optimiert. Zusätzlich gibt Blender jetzt Warnungen aus, wenn ein Objekt eine negative Skalierung aufweist, was bei einigen Werkzeugen zu Problemen führen kann.
Videoschnitt: Effekte, Textboxen und Farben
Im Video Sequence Editor (VSE) bearbeitet Blender Videos direkt in der 3D-Software. Dort arbeiten fast alle Effekte jetzt schneller. Auch die Hintergrundbox für Texte wird um ein Vielfaches schneller gerendert. Ecken lassen sich abrunden.
Das Textwerkzeug ist vor allem für Untertitelung beliebt und unterstützt jetzt zentrierte und rechtsbündige Darstellung. Weiterhin kann man Text in der neuen Version im Vorschaufenster bearbeiten, indem man mit der Tabulatortaste in den Editiermodus wechselt.
Die Textbox im Video Sequence Editor unterstützt jetzt runde Ecken und zentrierten Text. Der Inhalt lässt sich direkt im Vorschaufenster bearbeiten.
Ebenfalls im Vorschaufenster können beliebige Strips mit dem in Blender üblichen Tastenkürzel Strg+D dupliziert werden. Damit nähert sich die Bedienung des VSE den restlichen Bereichen von Blender an. Beim Kopieren und Duplizieren von Strips berücksichtigt Blender Abhängigkeiten wie zugewiesene Effekte.
Export in H.265 und mit definiertem Farbraum
Beim Videoimport berücksichtigt Blender künftig das Orientation-Flag der Metadaten. Hochkant-Videos erscheinen damit nicht mehr auf der Seite liegend. Beim Export gibt Blender den Farbraum mit. Bisher war dieser nicht definiert, was dazu führte, dass unterschiedliche Videoplayer abweichende Farben darstellten.
Fürs Ausspielen steht jetzt der H.265/HEVC-Codec zur Verfügung. Damit lassen sich Videos mit 10 oder 12 Bit Farbtiefe pro Kanal speichern, was für HDR-Displays relevant ist. Auch beim Einlesen von Videodaten unterstützt Blender fortan höhere Farbtiefe.
Compositor: schnellere Effekte
Beim Nachbearbeiten von Bewegtbildern, dem sogenannten Compositing, berechnet Blender Effekte deutlich schneller als zuvor. Die Entwickler sprechen hier von einem Faktor zwei bis zehn.
Wenn man in Blender 4.3 ein Bild im Compositor erst verkleinert und dann wieder vergrößert, so verpixelt es, denn alle Transformationen werden destruktiv auf das Bild angewandt. In Blender 4.4 passiert das erst so spät wie möglich. Im Beispiel würde Blender die Originalpixel des Bilds erhalten. Für einen gewünschten Pixeleffekt existiert eine eigene Node.
Compositor-Effekte soll Blender 4.4 (rot) gegenüber Blender 4.3 (blau) um den Faktor 2 bis 10 schneller berechnen.

Verbesserte Node für Lichteffekte
Die Lichthöfe um helle Lichtquellen auf Fotos und in Videos heißen Glare. Blender 4.4 hat im Compositor eine aktualisierte Glare-Node erhalten, also einen Knoten, der diesen Effekt berechnet.
Bei der Glare Node sind einige neue Parameter hinzugekommen und alle Einstellungen lassen sich jetzt mit anderen Nodes verknüpfen. An Ausgängen finden sich neben dem bearbeiteten Bild auch nur der Effekt an sich und eine Repräsentation der betroffenen Bildbereiche. Deren maximale Helligkeit kann man ebenfalls einschränken, wodurch eine besonders helle Lichtquelle wie die Sonne nicht mehr dazu führt, dass gleich das gesamte Bild überstrahlt wird.
Komplexe Animation mit Slotted Actions
Im Animationssystem lassen sich über Slotted Actions jetzt Animationen zusammenfassen. Eine Animation, in Blender auch Action genannt, kann zum Beispiel eine Kamerafahrt sein. Während der Fahrt könnte sich die Brennweite ändern, um auf ein Objekt zu zoomen.
Blender konnte das bisher nur in zwei unterschiedlichen Actions speichern. In Blender 4.4 lassen sich Animationen gruppieren und verknüpfen. Vor allem Nutzer von Spiele-Engines wie der Unreal Engine fragen diese Funktion nach, da sie dort ebenfalls vorhanden ist.
Die Neuerungen haben zur Folge, dass alte Dateien nicht mehr kompatibel sind; Blender konvertiert sie aber automatisch. Wird eine mit Blender 4.4 oder neuer gespeicherte Datei mit einer älteren Version geöffnet, ist dort jeweils nur die erste Aktion einer Gruppe sichtbar. Weitere Aktionen werden beim Speichern der Datei verworfen. Vorsicht ist also geboten.
Neue Mindestanforderungen
Nutzer von Intel-GPUs müssen für Blender 4.4 mindestens die Treiberversion 101.6557 installiert haben, unter Linux mindestens Version 31740.8. Wer eine AMD-Grafikkarte nutzt, benötigt unter Windows mindestens Adrenalin 24.6.1 oder die Radeon Pro Treiber in Version 24.Q2, unter Linux mindestens die ROCm-Version 6.0.
Im Gegenzug wird von AMD jetzt auch die RDNA4-Architektur der Serie AMD RX 90×0 unterstützt. Die Hardwarebeschleunigung für Raytracing HIP RT ist nicht länger als experimentell gekennzeichnet. Bei nVidia kommt Unterstützung der RTX-90×0-Karten auf Basis der Blackwell-Architektur hinzu.
Update für den OptiX-Denoiser
Für nVidia-Nutzer ebenfalls relevant ist das Update des OptiX-Denoisers. Er kümmert sich nach dem Rendern eines Bildes mit der Cycles-Renderengine darum, eventuell noch vorhandenes Bildrauschen zu entfernen. Dabei soll die neue Version deutlich bessere Qualität abliefern.
Die Demo-Szene von Metin Seven wurde in der linken Bildhälfte mit der alten Version des Optix-Denoisers entrauscht, rechts mit der neuen Version aus Blender 4.4. Das Rauschen im Körper des Monsters ist mit dem neuen Denoising fast komplett verschwunden.

Grafikschnittstelle Vulkan: reduzierte Ladezeiten
Blender nutzt als Grafikschnittstelle derzeit noch OpenGL. Über kurz oder lang wollen die Entwickler aber zum moderneren Vulkan wechseln. Wer möchte, kann das Vulkan-Backend schon ausprobieren. Dann stehen zwar ein paar Funktionen wie VR-Unterstützung im Viewport nicht mehr zur Verfügung, dafür belohnt Blender 4.4 den Umstieg mit halbierter Ladezeit bei großen Szenen. Für Vulkan ist die Installation der jeweils aktuellen Grafiktreiber empfehlenswert.
Seit mehreren Jahren vertreibt Fujifilm mit der sogenannten Instax-Link-Serie, eine Reihe mobiler Fotodrucker, die Fotos kabellos vom iPhone auf Sofortbildfilm bringen. Die Geräte kommunizieren per Bluetooth mit der App des Anbieters, in der Nutzer ihre Bilder bearbeiten und ausgeben können.
Ein Modell, das sich durch sein breiteres Druckformat von 99 x 62 Millimeter auszeichnet, ist der „Link WIDE“-Drucker. Neben privaten Anwendern kommt das Gerät häufig auch bei Events und Hochzeiten zum Einsatz.
Ursprünglich war die Nutzung der „Link WIDE“-Drucker auf mobile Geräte beschränkt, im vergangenen Jahr kündigte Fujifilm dann an, Desktop-Treiber veröffentlichen zu wollen und stellte bereits im letzt August einen entsprechenden Download für Windows-Nutzer zur Verfügung. Inzwischen steht auch ein Treiber zur Verfügung, der den direkten Druck vom Mac aus erlaubt.
Mac-Treiber ab sofort verfügbar
Der Druckertreiber für Mac-Anwender lässt sich von dieser Webseite laden. Das Software-Paket ist mit allen macOS-Versionen ab 10.15 kompatibel. Die Installation erfolgt über eine PKG-Datei, die nach dem Download per Doppelklick ausgeführt wird.
Fujifilm gibt an, dass Nutzer verschiedene Farbparameter wie Helligkeit, Kontrast und Sättigung anpassen können. Zudem können Anwender zwischen dem „Instax Rich Mode“ für intensivere Farben und dem „Instax Natural Mode“ für die typische Instax-Optik wählen.
Verbindung und Einschränkungen
Der Drucker verbindet sich ausschließlich über Bluetooth mit dem Rechner. Eine Anbindung per USB oder WLAN wird nicht unterstützt. Zudem kann das Gerät immer nur mit einem Mac gleichzeitig gekoppelt sein. Nach Abschluss eines Druckvorgangs ist es jedoch möglich, das Gerät mit einem anderen Rechner zu verbinden.
Aktualisierungen der Drucker-Firmware erfolgen weiterhin ausschließlich über die Instax-Link-WIDE-App über das iPhone. Auch verschiedene Smartphone-Funktionen wie QR-Print, Collage-Print oder Skizzenbearbeitung bleiben auf die mobile Anwendung beschränkt und können nicht über den Desktop-Treiber genutzt werden.

Amazon Echo users will no longer have the option to process their Alexa requests locally, which means all of their voice recordings will be sent to the company’s cloud.
Ars Technica reports that on Friday, Amazon sent an email to customers who have “Do Not Send Voice Recordings” enabled on their Echo smart speakers and displays, stating the company would stop supporting the privacy-enhancing feature on March 28.
“As we continue to expand Alexa’s capabilities with generative AI features that rely on the processing power of Amazon’s secure cloud, we have decided to no longer support this feature,” the email said.
This comes as Amazon is rolling out a new version of its voice-controlled AI assistant, now known as Alexa+. Consumers and regulators have raised concerns about Alexa’s privacy implications in the past, with Amazon agreeing to pay a $25 million in 2023 settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over children’s privacy.

Dokumente lassen sich durch einfaches Drag-and-Drop zur Analyse hinzufügen.
Mit Markdown- und LaTeX-Darstellung
Neben der Textanalyse unterstützt Sidekick weitere Funktionen wie Bildgenerierung, Diagrammerstellung und mathematische Berechnungen. Dazu greift die Software auf verschiedene lokale KI-Modelle zurück, darunter „QwQ-32B“ von Alibaba und „DeepSeek-R1“ von DeepSeek.
Für Berechnungen verwendet Sidekick einen Code-Interpreter, der mathematische und logische Aufgaben durch direkte Codeausführung lösen soll. Diagramme und Tabellenvisualisierungen werden bei Bedarf automatisch erstellt und können von andere Anwendungen übernommen werden. Zudem ist eine Markdown- und LaTeX-Darstellung integriert.
Installation und Systemanforderungen
Sidekick ist ausschließlich für macOS verfügbar und setzt Macs mit Apple-Prozessoren und mit mindestens 8 GB RAM voraus. Nach Angaben der Entwickler verfolgt Sidekick das Ziel, lokal arbeitende KI-Modelle für eine breite Nutzergruppe zugänglich zu machen, ohne dabei Konfigurationen oder technische Vorkenntnisse zu erfordern.
As YouTube’s role in podcasting increases, Pocket Casts announced today that its web, Mac, and Windows apps are now free with a subscription no longer required.
The Automattic-owned Pocket Casts has long offered web and desktop clients, but this previously required a “Plus” ($3.99 per month/$39.99 annual) or “Patron” ($9.99 per month/$99.99 annual) subscription to access.
As of today, the “Pocket Casts Web Player is now accessible to all, no subscription required”: play.pocketcasts.com. It follows Apple Podcasts launching a web app last August.
These changes also apply to our Mac and Windows Desktop Apps, giving you more ways to listen on your terms.
Additionally, you can be signed out and use the apps to browse/play. Making an account will allow: Syncing playback progress across devices, Managing your podcast queue seamlessly, and Saving subscriptions and preferences.
As for why Pocket Casts is making this change:

Now, almost every device is equipped with this technology, and each of us uses biometrics to unlock our devices.
Blockchain-Based Identity Networks
Organizational identity networks are being built by such consortia as ID2020, Sovrin Foundation, and Trust over IP on open-source, blockchain-anchored organizational identity networks with user control. It is such an internet-scale trust layer for portable, self-sovereign credentials that can operate across industries and borders.
Convergence with IoT and Edge Computing
Statista forecasts there will be 39.6 billion connected IoT devices by 2033, enabling ambient identity capabilities.

Decentralization gave users more power than they had in closed, centralized systems.
Like self-sovereign identity networks, digital identity and service delivery are promised to change through the power of self-sovereignty. The technology returns power to the people over institutions by removing centralized intermediaries. But decentralized identity networks have to have common standards and global collaboration to grow to the scale of the Internet. Experts predict that if digital identity achieves its goal, it will follow the same path of open source and usher in a new paradigm of user empowerment — in the vein of personal computing and the Internet, once information access is liberated.

Researchers in Germany asked young adults to limit their phone use to only essentials (work and actual conversations—no doomscrolling). After just three days, MRI scans showed reduced activity in the brain’s reward system when participants saw images of smartphones—meaning their brains were literally less addicted to their screens. One area, the ventral striatum (which plays a key role in cravings), became less reactive to phone-related stimuli, similar to what’s seen in people breaking substance addictions.
While participants didn’t report major mood shifts, many said they felt better overall. And considering that endless notifications, comparison traps and blue-light-induced sleepless nights aren’t exactly soul-nourishing, that tracks.
So if your screen time report has been personally attacking you (the study found people averaged 2.5 hours of daily phone use before the detox), maybe a weekend unplugged is worth a shot. Take a break, touch some grass and see if your brain thanks you for it.

Neben einer beschleunigten Suchfunktion wurde der Dark-Mode weiter ausgebaut. Zudem sind neue Sender in die Anwendung integriert worden.
Darkmode und Schnellere Suchfunktion
Die Suche innerhalb von MediathekView wurde angepasst und soll nun schneller und effizienter reagieren. Zusätzlich wurde die moderne Suche um eine Funktion erweitert, mit der Filmduplikate berücksichtigt werden können.
Der Dark-Mode wurde in mehreren Bereichen der Software verbessert. Der Einstellungs- sowie der Filter-Dialog sind nun vollständig an den Dunkelmodus angepasst. Auch in weiteren Bereichen, darunter die Textfelder in den Dialogen „Film speichern“ und „Neues Abo anlegen“, seien Anpassungen vorgenommen worden. Zudem wurden Darstellungsprobleme beim Wechsel zwischen hellem und dunklem Modus unter macOS behoben.
Neue Sender und weitere Anpassungen
Durch das Update sind die Sender ONE, ARD-alpha und tagesschau24 nun in der Senderliste verfügbar. Nutzer müssen die neuen Sender jedoch manuell in den Einstellungen aktivieren, um sie in der Programmauswahl sehen zu können.
Zusätzlich wurden weitere Verbesserungen und Fehlerkorrekturen vorgenommen. So erkennt MediathekView nun doppelt vorhandene Einträge in der Filmliste und hebt sie optisch hervor. Die Merkliste unterstützt jetzt eine Mehrfachauswahl und wurde um eine neue Symbolleiste erweitert. Zudem wurde die Verwaltung von Untertiteldateien optimiert, sodass diese direkt mit der entsprechenden Sprachzuordnung hinzugefügt werden können.
Neue Funktionen zur Duplikaterkennung ermöglichen es, doppelte Einträge per Filter auszublenden oder nach Sender zu sortieren. Die Filmstatistik zeigt Übersichten über vorhandene Filme und Duplikate an.
Die Macher des Open-Source-Projektes stellen zudem klar, dass Ausgabe 14.2 die letzte Version ist, die mit macOS 10.15 Catalina kompatibel sein wird. Zukünftig wird zur Nutzung der App mindestens macOS 11 benötigt.

Vor einem Jahr haben Motorola und Lenovo auf dem MWC 2024 "Smart Connect" als mögliche Lösung vorgestellt. Zum Start stand die gemeinsame Nutzung von Hardware-Ressourcen im Fokus, also beispielsweise das Nutzen der Handy-Webcam für Videocalls am Computer – oder der geräteübergreifende Einsatz der verbundenen Maus. Und: Es ging auch damals schon um das Datenchaos. So lässt sich beispielsweise am Tablet ein Film abspielen, der auf dem Notebook gespeichert ist.
Smart Connect 2.0 mit künstlicher Intelligenz
Auch wenn das neue Smart Connect, das wir uns auf dem MWC ansehen konnten, nicht offiziell die Versionsnummer "2.0" trägt, steht hier dennoch ein großes KI-Update an. Am interessantesten ist wohl die neue Suche mit künstlicher Intelligenz. Ihr müsst jetzt nicht mehr genau nach Keywords suchen, sondern könnt einfach sagen "Such mir diese Liste mit Restaurant-Tipps für meinen Urlaub heraus", und bekommt dann geräteübergreifend Ergebnisse präsentiert.
Zum Start klappt das erstmal mit Dokumenten, bald sollen aber auch Bilder und weitere Medien zur Suche hinzukommen. Außerdem könnt Ihr über den KI-Assistenten auch geräteübergreifend Apps ansteuern, zum Beispiel per Handy Instagram auf dem Computer starten, wenn Ihr hier bequem einen Post zusammenbasteln wollt. Und ja, auf der Roadmap steht auch die Übergabe von Inhalten direkt in die Apps – das gerade aufgenommene Foto wäre dann also direkt im Teilen-Dialog von Instagram geöffnet.
Geräteübergreifend – und herstellerübergreifend!
Smart Connect ist bereits jetzt für Computer aller Hersteller mit Windows 10 und Windows 11 verfügbar, allerdings noch auf Motorola-Smartphones und Lenovo-Tablets beschränkt. Mit dem anstehenden Update von Smart Connect soll diese Einschränkung fallen – es werden dann tatsächlich alle Android-Smartphones und -Tablets sowie weiterhin Windows-Computer ab Windows 10 unterstützt. Wenn Ihr Ordnung in Euer Datenchaos bringen wollt, dann haltet also die Augen offen.
Den Untergang auch nur einer Weltordnung mitzuerleben, hätte mir durchaus genügt. Jedoch ist 1989 ff. ja Warnung genug gewesen, dass unveränderlich Geglaubtes, unverrückbare Gewissheiten und ewige Sicherheiten nicht mehr als ein Blatt im Wind sind.
Wenn der einmal zum Sturm sich aufbläht, geht es ganz schnell. Es ist halt ein bisschen viel grad. Die Erinnerung an die eigene Bedeutungslosigkeit vibriert unaufhörlich in der Hosentasche. Die imperiale Neuordnung der Welt kommt als Trommelfeuer schlechter Nachrichten auf jedes Smartphone.
Soweit man noch an Nachrichten glaubt und sich nicht schon völlig den Verschwörungstheorien und der libidinösen Verlockung der Apokalypse ergeben hat. Eine brennende Welt aber ist nicht sexy. Das können all jene bestätigen, die die letzten Jahrzehnte nicht in der mittel- und westeuropäischen Wohlstandsblase verbracht haben.
Was also ist die Lösung für die Polykrise? Für die Beantwortung solcher Fragen beschäftigt jede Zeitung ihre Geo- und sonstigen Politikchecker, die im Wesentlichen davon leben, dass niemand hinterher zurückblättert und ihnen die falschen Vorhersagen um die Ohren haut. „Die Regierung wäre gut beraten …“ Lol. Das hier ist eine Digitalkolumne.
Schmal und dunkel
Ich weiß nicht, wie weit Putin gehen und ob er seine Panzer in vier Wochen noch betanken kann. Ich weiß nicht, ob Merz mit der AfD „nur“ droht oder tatsächlich zeitnah zur Zusammenarbeit bereit ist. Ich weiß nicht, was dann wirklich geschähe (obwohl der Korridor der Möglichkeiten sehr schmal und dunkel ist). Ich weiß nicht, ob Trump einen militärischen Konflikt mit Nato-Staaten in Kauf zu nehmen bereit ist. Ob ihn jemand aufhielte.
Was ich aber weiß, ist, dass es mit gegebenen Unsicherheiten ganz gut wäre, sich unabhängig von zentral gesteuerten, nicht demokratisch kontrollierten digitalen Infrastrukturen zu machen. Denn ich weiß, was passiert, wenn Cloudprodukte großer Internetkonzerne plötzlich (also wirklich von einer Minute auf die nächste!) nicht mehr zur Verfügung stehen. Entweder, weil sie absichtlich vom Anbieter abgeschaltet oder aber von außen attackiert werden.
Ich weiß, was passiert, wenn private wie öffentliche Kommunikation der ganzen Welt mit einem Knopfdruck verändert oder unterbrochen werden. Es ist eben keine Frage der Moral oder der politischen Hygiene, besser dezentrale und unabhängige Infrastruktur zu benutzen. Es ist eine Frage des Selbstschutzes.
Tiktok wird dir nicht einfach so den Zugang zu deinem Publikum verwehren. Wirklich? Der Zugang zu deinen Office-365-Dokumenten kann nicht unangekündigt gekappt werden. Was macht dich so sicher? Bluesky wird nie so wie Twitter enden. Ach, echt? – Dein Glaube an die Zukunft ist bewundernswert. Ich fange jetzt bestimmt nicht an, einen Bunker in meinem Garten zu buddeln. she was greeted by a black box where her flowers used to be, a
censored version of what she had meant to capture.
It was around this time when streaming platforms like Netflix, HBO
Max, Amazon Prime, and the Criterion Channel imposed a quiet
embargo on the screenshot. At first, there were workarounds: users
could continue to screenshot by using the browser Brave or by
downloading extensions or third-party tools like Fireshot. But
gradually, the digital-rights-management tech adapted and became
more sophisticated. Today, it is nearly impossible to take a
screenshot from the most popular streaming services, at least not
on a Macintosh computer. […]

With the use of Snipping Tool — a utility exclusive to Microsoft
Windows, users are free to screen grab content from all streaming
platforms. This seems like a pointed oversight, a choice on the
part of streamers to exclude Mac users (though they make up a tiny
fraction of the market) because of their assumed cultural class.
This assumption isn’t unreasonable. Out of everyone interviewed
for this article, only one of them was a PC user.
Deligter’s essay has been sitting in my long (and ever-growing) list of things to link to ever since she published it back in 2023. I referenced it in my post earlier today re: Matthew Green’s entreaty to Apple to add “disappearing messages” to iMessage, and re-reading it made me annoyed enough to finally write about it.
I’m not entirely sure what the technical answer to this is, but on MacOS, it seemingly involves the GPU and video decoding hardware. These DRM blackouts happen at such a low level that no high-level software — any sort of utility you might install — can route around them. I think Windows still offers easy screenshotting of frames from DRM video not because the streaming services somehow don’t care about what Windows users do (which, when you think about it, would be a weird thing not to care about, given Windows’s market share), but because Windows uses a less sophisticated imaging pipeline. Or perhaps rather than less sophisticated, it’s more accurate to say less integrated. These DRM blackouts on Apple devices (you can’t capture screenshots from DRM video on iPhones or iPads either) are enabled through the deep integration between the OS and the hardware, thus enabling the blackouts to be imposed at the hardware level. And I don’t think the streaming services opt into this screenshot prohibition other than by “protecting” their video with DRM in the first place. If a video is DRM-protected, you can’t screenshot it; if it’s not, you can.
On the Mac, it used to be the case that DRM video was blacked-out from screen capture in Safari, but not in Chrome (or the dozens of various Chromium-derived browsers). But at some point a few years back, you stopped being able to capture screenshots from DRM videos in Chrome, too — by default. But in Chrome’s Settings page, under System, if you disable “Use graphics acceleration when available” and relaunch Chrome, boom, you can screenshot everything in a Chrome window, including DRM video. You can go to the magic URL chrome://gpu/ before and after toggling this setting to see a full report on the differences — as you’d expect, it turns off all hardware acceleration for video encoding/decoding, compositing, and more. You wouldn’t want to browse like this all the time (certainly not on battery power), but it’s a great trick to know for capturing stills from videos.
What I don’t understand is why Apple bothered supporting this in the first place for hardware-accelerated video (which is all video on iOS platforms — there is no workaround like using Chrome with hardware acceleration disabled on iPhone or iPad). No one is going to create bootleg copies of DRM-protected video one screenshotted still frame at a time — and even if they tried, they’d be capturing only the images, not the sound. And it’s not like this “feature” in MacOS and iOS has put an end to bootlegging DRM-protected video content. This “feature” accomplishes nothing of value for anyone, including the streaming services, but imposes a massive (and for most people, confusing and frustrating) hindrance on honest people simply trying to easily capture high-quality (as opposed to, say, using their damn phone to take a photograph of their reflective laptop display) screenshots of the shows and movies they’re watching.

Apple has promised to fix a bug in its iPhone automatic dictation tool after some users reported it had suggested to them “Trump” when they said the word “racist”.
The glitch was first highlighted in a viral post on Tiktok, when the speech-to-text tool sometimes briefly flashed up the word “Trump” when they said “racist”, and was later repeated by others on social media.
“We are aware of an issue with the speech recognition model that powers dictation and we are rolling out a fix,” an Apple spokesperson said.
The company blamed the bug on its tool displaying words that have “phonetic overlap” before the “intended word” is identified, which in this case included words with the “r” consonant.
The bug also called into question Apple’s artificial intelligence capabilities, only a day after the company announced a $500bn (£395bn) investment in the US, widely interpreted as a move designed to appeal to Donald Trump’s government.
The tech company said on Monday that the investment, running over the next four years, would include a giant factory in Texas for artificial intelligence servers and would create about 20,000 research and development jobs across the country.
The AI announcement came only days after Apple’s chief executive, Tim Cook, reportedly met Trump. The company could face 10% tariffs on its devices, many of which are assembled in China before being imported into the US.
The maker of the iPhone did manage to secure some waivers on tariffs levied on China during Trump’s first term.
It is not the first time Apple has announced a multibillion-dollar investment in the US economy during a Trump administration. In 2018, during his first term in the White House, Apple said that new and ongoing investments would contribute $350bn to the US economy over five years.
Since Trump’s election and his signing of a slew of executive orders overturning diversity, equity and inclusion measures in the federal government, many in the tech sector have followed suit with a rollback of similar schemes – including Google, Amazon and Meta. Adjustment Clips: Easily make changes to multiple clips on the Timeline at once to tweak colors and add filters, as well as change the position/size/scale and cropping for all layers below the Adjustment Clip on the timeline. Multiple adjustment clips can be layered with keyframing to design animations and effects, enabling users to maximize the benefits of having 12 tracks to work with.
These two are huge updates for me. Before this update, Lumafusion was limited to having 6 video & audio tracks. While 90% of the time, that was fine for my use cases, there were some instances where I wished I could have one or two more video tracks to add layers of text and animations. This is now fully fixed with this new 12-track feature. Then, the adjustment clip feature is going to be a game changer for efficiency and time-saving. You were always able to copy over edits from clip to clip, but this now allows you to copy edits from three clips (for example) and then paste them over to another three clips. Before, you would have to copy and paste each section individually. Again, this is huge for us who use Lumafusion ion on a daily basis.
Pricing & availability
One of my favorite things about LumaTouch, in general, is that they offer one-time purchases for everything. For example, Lumafusion is available as a one-time purchase for any platform for $29.99. So you do not have to deal with subscriptions if you do not want to, but they also offer those subscriptions for the people who prefer that for those enhancement features.
As I mentioned, those first few features are free for any Lumafusion user who just updates. But if you want the new 12-track support and the adjustment clips feature, it is a one-time payment of $19.99, or it comes included with the monthly Creator Pass subscription.

Creator Pass is something that Lumafusion added that is relatively new. As I said, Lumafusion always offers one-time in-app purchases for its major features like:

But they have now introduced a Creator pass, which is $9.99 per month and gives you all these features, as well as any new features like the 12-track capabilities. The Creator pass also includes Story blocks integration, so you can access unlimited royalty-free music downloads directly from the LumaFusion Library, as well as video and sound effects. So, it is not a bad deal.
Final thoughts
These new features just continue to solidify Lumafusion as one of the best, if not the best, mobile editors for iPad. Every YouTube video I create for the channel has been done on Lumafusion. What is amazing about it is that it is for newbies who have never edited before, and it is also for the super-experienced video editor who does this for a profession. My only feature request is that they make a corresponding camera app for the iPhone that allows Lumafusion to be a viewfinder as well! Maybe one day!
Lastly, the beauty of Lumafusion is that it works across all of iPadOS. So whether you have a $279 iPad 10th generation or a fully loaded $2000+ M4 iPad Pro, Lumafusion will still run!

iOS 18.4: Video zeigt 50 Neuerungen
Nachdem iOS 18.3 ein verhältnismäßig kleines Update darstellte, geht es mit iOS 18.4 mit besonders großen Schritten auch vorne, insbesondere für europäische und damit auch für deutsche Nutzer. Der Grund hierfür ist recht simpel. Apple erweitert mit iOS 18.4 Apple Intelligence auf weitere Regionen und Sprachen. Erfreulicherweise wird auch die deutsche Sprache unterstützt und kann mit der Beta 1 bzw. Public Beta 1 direkt ausprobiert werden.
Neben der Einführung von Apple Intelligence in weiteren Ländern und Regionen bringt iOS 18.4 zahlreiche weitere Neuerungen mit sich. Bei Präsentationen, in Unterrichtssituationen oder während laufender Schulungen kann es sinnvoll sein, den eigenen Bildschirm mit dem Kunden, der Klasse oder den Kollegen zu teilen. Dies kann jedoch problematisch sein, wenn der eigene Monitor deutlich besser aufgelöst und größer ist, als die Displays, mit denen die Zuschauer beziehungsweise die Teilnehmer arbeiten. Virtuelles Display als App
Die Open-Source-Anwendung DeskPad soll hier eine Lösung bieten. DeskPad erstellt ein virtuelles Display, das innerhalb eines Anwendungsfensters gespiegelt wird. So können Nutzer einen separaten, leichter teilbaren Arbeitsbereich einrichten. Dies könnte insbesondere Online-Schulungen oder kollaboratives Arbeiten von Vorteil sein.
DeskPad verhält sich laut Entwicklern wie ein herkömmlicher Monitor. Sobald die Anwendung gestartet wird, erkennt macOS das virtuelle Display und verwaltet die Fenster entsprechend der vorherigen Anordnung. Nutzer können über die Systemeinstellungen die Auflösung anpassen, woraufhin sich das Anwendungsfenster entsprechend skaliert.
Die Applikation hebt den Fenstertitel außerdem Blau hervor, wenn der Mauszeiger auf das virtuelle Display bewegt wird. Dadurch soll erkennbar sein, auf welchem Bildschirmbereich sich der Nutzer gerade befindet.

Der Download des kostenfreien Angebotes läuft über die Code-Plattform GitHub. Die 1 MB kleine Datei wird anschließend lediglich in den eigenen Programme-Ordner verschoben und kann hier dann per Doppelklick gestartet werden. Die Open-Source-Anwendung HandBrake hat mit Version 1.9.2 ein weiteres Wartungsupdate erhalten. Seit der Bereitstellung von Version 1.9 im Dezember profitieren auch Mac-Nutzer wieder von den Neuerungen, da zahlreiche Fehlerkorrekturen und Verbesserungen auch für das Apple-Betriebssystem umgesetzt wurden.
So wurde unter anderem ein Problem behoben, das zu korrupten Videodateien führen konnte, wenn der HEVC-Encoder im Mehrfachdurchgang genutzt wurde. Zudem wurden Fehler bei der Verarbeitung von Kapitelnamen korrigiert.
Einfache Video-Komprimierung
Handbrake ist ein Video-Konverter, der Quellvideos ohne sichtbaren Qualitätsverlust verkleinern kann, zudem aber auch die Verwaltung von Untertiteln, Kapiteln und zusätzliche Tonspuren übernehmen kann.
Nach Angaben des Teams handelt es sich beim aktuellen Update um ein Wartungsupdate, das einige Fehler der vorherigen Version behebt und externe Softwarebibliotheken aktualisiert. Nutzer sollten vor dem Update sicherstellen, dass sich keine aktiven Umwandlungsaufträge in der Warteschlange befinden. Zudem könnte es erforderlich sein, individuelle Voreinstellungen zu sichern, da diese unter Umständen nicht mit der neuen Version kompatibel sind.
Verbesserungen und behobene Fehler
Zu den wichtigsten Änderungen gehört die Möglichkeit, NVENC AV1 und VCN AV1 in einem WebM-Container zu verwenden. Ein Fehler, der zu Abstürzen führen konnte, wenn Quelldateien Kapitel ohne Titel enthielten, soll nun behoben sein. Für Windows-Nutzer wurde ein Problem korrigiert, bei dem die Audiotrack-Benennung beim Wechsel der Quellspur nicht ordnungsgemäß zurückgesetzt wurde.
Das Update enthält zudem Aktualisierungen externer Softwarebibliotheken, die unter anderem die Video- und Untertitelverarbeitung betreffen.
HandBrake wird von einem kleinen Team aus Freiwilligen entwickelt. Rückmeldungen und Fehlermeldungen können über das offizielle GitHub-Portal eingereicht werden. Die Affinity-Anwendungen Affinity Designer, Affinity Publisher und Affinity Photo stehen in Ausgabe 2.6 zum Download bereit – ein großes Update, das nun auch auf lokale KI setzt. So hat Affinity zwei neue Werkzeuge eingeführt, die auf maschinellem Lernen basieren: das „Object Selection Tool“ und die Funktion „Select Subject“.
Diese sollen die Bildbearbeitung erleichtern, indem sie automatisch Objekte oder das Hauptmotiv eines Bildes erkennen und auswählen. Die notwendigen Modelle müssen separat heruntergeladen werden und werden lokal auf dem jeweiligen Gerät ausgeführt. Laut Hersteller werden dabei keine Nutzerdaten für weiteres Training genutzt oder an externe Server übertragen. Zusammen wiegen die beiden benötigten Modelle für Affinity Photo etwa 350 MB.
Das „Object Selection Tool“ („Segmentierung“ in deutschen Installationen) erlaubt es, bestimmte Objekte in einem Bild direkt auszuwählen, während „Select Subject“ (Hauptmotiv) das zentrale Element eines Bildes identifizieren und automatisch markieren kann. Beide Funktionen stehen sowohl auf dem Desktop als auch auf dem iPad zur Verfügung.
Neue Druckfunktionen für Affinity Publisher
Neben den Neuerungen in der Bildbearbeitung wurde auch die Layout-Software Affinity Publisher erweitert. Mit Version 2.6 können mehrseitige Druckbögen erstellt werden. Dies soll es ermöglichen, komplexe Layouts wie Trifold- oder Akkordeon-Flyer direkt in der Software zu gestalten.
Zusätzlich wurden neue Optionen zur Seitenverwaltung hinzugefügt. Nutzer können nun die automatische Anpassung von Seiteninhalten deaktivieren oder gezielt steuern. Damit lassen sich Dokumente mit festen Layouts besser verwalten. Außerdem wurden neue Symbole zur Übersicht der Seitenanordnung eingeführt.
Eine weitere Neuerung ist die verbesserte Verwaltung von Masterseiten. Anwender haben nun die Möglichkeit, Masterseiten individuell auf bestimmte Abschnitte anzuwenden oder zu überarbeiten. Dies kann besonders bei umfangreichen Dokumenten mit vielen wiederkehrenden Elementen hilfreich sein.
Neues für Affinity Designer und Photo
Affinity Designer bietet in der neuen Version optimierte Zeichenwerkzeuge. Der „Pencil Tool“ erhielt zusätzliche Optionen für die Kurvenglättung und eine erweiterte Auto-Schließ-Funktion für Formen. Auch das „Pen Tool“ wurde um eine Option zur Anwendung vordefinierter Linienstile erweitert.
In Affinity Photo wurden mehrere Anpassungen vorgenommen, die insbesondere die Benutzerfreundlichkeit verbessern sollen. So können nun Bildebenen direkt für bestimmte Bearbeitungsmodi genutzt werden, ohne dass sie vorher umgewandelt werden müssen. Zudem wurde der „Color Picker“ optimiert, sodass gewählte Farben nun automatisch auf das markierte Objekt angewendet werden.
Weitere Änderungen betreffen die Unterstützung neuer RAW-Formate sowie eine erweiterte Linsenkorrektur-Datenbank. Zudem wurde in Affinity Publisher eine Funktion zur Steuerung der Lesereihenfolge von PDFs eingeführt, um die Barrierefreiheit von Dokumenten zu verbessern.
Weiterhin zum Einmalkauf
Mit diesen Neuerungen bringt die Version 2.6 zahlreiche Verbesserungen für professionelle Nutzer und Hobby-Anwender.
Die drei Anwendungen setzen weiterhin auf ein einmaliges Kaufmodell und verlangen keine wiederkehrenden Abogebühren. Wer die komplette Software-Suite auf Mac, iPad und Windows nutzen möchte, zahlt dafür einmalig 179 Euro.
