AI didn’t start with ChatGPT but that’s when most people started paying attention.
While tools like ChatGPT have made AI a household name, the story of artificial intelligence goes back over 70 years. Visionaries like Alan Turing were asking if machines could think as early as the 1950s.
The evolution of AI has been far from linear. It’s a story of breakthroughs and setbacks, of AI springs and long AI winters. But with the public release of ChatGPT in 2022, something changed. Suddenly, AI wasn’t just in labs or research papers, it was in lesson plans, emails, creative writing, and every staff meeting.
So today, I created a visual that highlights 10 key moments in AI history based on the most influential readings I’ve come across. I stopped at 2022 because the last two years deserve a timeline of their own.
Feel free to use this visual in your PD sessions, classes, or presentations. And if you’re teaching in the age of AI, knowing where it all started helps you better navigate where it’s going.
