‘Passion of the Christ’ Sequel to be a Two-Part Miracle

It looks like Mel Gibson isn’t just working on one sequel to The Passion of the Christ, but two.

According to the sequel’s IMDB page, the current title of the film is The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection — Part I. There’s also a 2025 release date added to the page.

In a recent interview, Jim Caviezel, who played Jesus in the original and is now 54 years old, described the sequel as “the biggest film in the history of the world.”

“Mel [Gibson] took me through all of the scenes and I was on the floor crying,” Caviezel said. “It’ll be one of the best things you’ve ever seen. I can’t tell you [when it’s coming out]. If I told you I’d have to kill you.”

The sequel to the 2004 blockbuster hit has been rumored for over a decade. (We broke down a timeline of events last year.) The original made $612 million and is the most successful R-rated film of all time (adjusted for inflation), so it’s no surprise that Gibson and Caveziel want to team up again.

World of Reel has reported that the sequel will pick up 24 hours after Jesus’ death, covering the three days between his crucifixion and resurrection.
