A new Lifeway Research survey reveals a growing consensus among Christians: the United States has a moral responsibility to welcome refugees. Seventy percent of evangelicals agree that accepting refugees is not just a political issue but an ethical one. Additionally, 73% believe Christians have a duty to care for displaced individuals.
The study highlights a broader evangelical stance on immigration. While 76% support immigration legislation that combines border security with a path to citizenship, 55% agree that Christians should assist immigrants even if they are in the country illegally. These findings reflect a mix of compassion and concern for lawful processes.
Another key takeaway is that 80% of evangelicals value sermons that teach biblical principles on immigration. Despite this, only 28% say they have heard immigration discussed in their church in a way that encouraged outreach to immigrants in their community. This gap suggests faith leaders have an opportunity to engage congregations in deeper conversations about immigration through a biblical lens.
Matthew Soerens, VP of Advocacy and Policy at World Relief, voiced concern over recent policy shifts affecting refugee resettlement.
“This is a legal process that has been in place for decades,” Soerens told RELEVANT. “Refugees are vetted overseas and arrive in the U.S. through a structured program. The people we work with have fled persecution—often for their faith—and have been granted legal entry.”
The distinction between refugees and illegal immigrants is often blurred in broader immigration conversations. Refugees flee persecution and are granted resettlement through a legal process established by Congress. Meanwhile, discussions on border security and citizenship pathways continue to shape Christian perspectives, with many supporting bipartisan reforms.
“The Bible is clear about our responsibility to care for the stranger,” Soerens said, referencing Ezekiel 22:30.
